Riverside Foods is delighted to announce our sponsorship of the Dravet Syndrome Charity Golf Day, set to take place at the prestigious Woburn Golf Club on Thursday 8th August 2024. The event is an incredible opportunity to support a meaningful cause while enjoying a day of golf on one of the finest courses in the country: the Marquess Course.

About the Dravet Syndrome Charity Golf Day

The Dravet Syndrome Charity Golf Day will take place at the Marquess Course at Woburn Golf Club on Thursday 8th August 2024. The day aims to raise funds and awareness of Dravet Syndrome.

The Marquess course at Woburn opened in 2000 and was named after the then Marquess of Tavistock. The rolling and undulating course has become known as the ‘Jewel in the Crown’, set within 200 acres of mixed woodland in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Riverside Foods is immensely proud to be part of this event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Dravet Syndrome. By bringing together golfers, supporters, and advocates, we hope to significantly impact the lives of those affected by this challenging condition.

Understanding Dravet Syndrome

Dravet Syndrome, also known as Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy (SMEI), is a rare form of epilepsy that begins in the first year of life. It is characterised by prolonged seizures triggered by fever, illness, or environmental factors. Unlike other forms of epilepsy, Dravet Syndrome is resistant to many types of treatment, making it particularly difficult to manage.

Dravet Syndrome is notably resistant to many conventional epilepsy medications, but the use of specific anti-epileptic drugs, dietary modifications, and, in some cases, surgical interventions can help to control symptoms.

As the child grows, other types of seizures, including myoclonic and absence seizures, may develop. Children with Dravet Syndrome often experience developmental delays, affecting their cognitive, motor, and social abilities. Seizures associated with Dravet Syndrome can be frequent and severe, sometimes lasting for hours. They may require emergency medical intervention to control. Common triggers include elevated body temperature, stress, flashing lights, and certain medications.

What is the impact of Dravet Syndrome?

Living with Dravet Syndrome presents numerous challenges for both the individual affected and their families. The constant risk of severe seizures and the need for ongoing medical care can be overwhelming. Additionally, the developmental delays associated with the syndrome mean that children often require specialised education and support throughout their lives.
