Meatballs have a deep-rooted history in Italian cuisine, dating back to ancient Rome, where they were made using a mix of meats, herbs, and bread soaked in milk. Over time, regional variations emerged, with Italian immigrants bringing their beloved polpette to the United States, where they became the famous meatballs we know today—often served with marinara sauce and melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • 400g pack of Riverside Foods turkey meatballs
  • 200ml marinara sauce
  • 50g finely grated Parmesan, divided
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 12 mozzarella slices, cut into small squares
  • Fresh basil leaves, for serving

Method

    1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the meatballs and sear until browned on all sides. Once they develop a golden crust, remove them and wipe the pan clean.

    2. Return the pan to the heat and pour in the marinara sauce. Stir in thinly sliced garlic and Parmesan, bringing the sauce to a gentle simmer. Place the meatballs back into the pan, spooning the sauce over them. Cover with a lid and simmer for 10–12 minutes, or until fully cooked.

    3. Top each meatball with mozzarella, cover again, and let cook until the cheese melts. Remove from heat, garnish with fresh basil leaves, and secure each with a toothpick for serving.
