Looking for a comforting yet nutritious twist on a classic family favourite? Our Turkey Meatball with Creamy Mushroom Sauce & Mash delivers all the flavour and warmth of the traditional recipe—with a lean, high-protein upgrade that’s fully halal.
Made with Riverside halal sage & onion turkey meatballs, this dish is lower in saturated fat and richer in protein than versions using pork or beef. Turkey is naturally leaner, and our meatballs are crafted from turkey, free from antibiotics, MRM, and GM ingredients. That means a purer, healthier bite without compromising on taste or texture. Ideal for menus aimed at wellness-conscious diners, schools, care homes, or healthcare settings, this recipe marries hearty comfort with nutritional peace of mind.
The creamy mushroom sauce adds rich, earthy depth without overpowering the clean flavour of the turkey. Served atop fluffy mashed potatoes and paired with vibrant greens, you’ve got an easy-to-prepare, freezer-friendly dish that’s as practical as it is satisfying.
By swapping traditional meatballs for our turkey alternative, this dish becomes a healthier, halal-friendly staple that’s versatile and delicious—perfect for menus that want comfort food with a conscience.
Ingredients
- 20–24 Riverside halal turkey meatballs or sage & onion turkey meatballs (about 500g)
- 25g butter
- 300g mushrooms, sliced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 150ml crème fraîche or single cream
- 200g frozen peas or green beans
- 800g floury potatoes (e.g. Maris Piper), peeled & chopped
- 50ml milk
- 25g butter (for mash)
- Salt and pepper
Method
-
Mash the potatoes: Boil until tender (10–15 mins). Drain, return to pan, add milk and butter, then mash until smooth. Keep warm.
-
Cook meatballs: In a non-stick pan, brown turkey meatballs over medium heat until golden (3–5 mins). Remove and set aside.
-
Prepare sauce: In the same pan, melt butter and fry onion for 8–10 mins until soft. Add garlic and mushrooms; cook until liquid evaporates.
-
Finish sauce: Stir in crème fraîche (or cream), then return meatballs to the pan; simmer 1–2 mins until heated through. Cook peas or beans separately until tender, then drain.
-
Assemble & serve: Plate mash, arrange meatballs and mushrooms on top, spoon over creamy sauce, and add a handful of green veg. Season to taste.
