Gluten Free Turkey Tabbouleh
Tabbouleh, a cherished dish from the Levantine region, has been enjoyed for centuries for its fresh and vibrant flavours. With roots in Lebanon and Syria, its name stems from the Arabic word taabil, meaning “to season,” reflecting its origins as a perfectly balanced and herbaceous salad. Traditionally prepared with bulgur wheat, parsley, mint, tomatoes, and a light lemon and olive oil dressing, tabbouleh exemplifies the wholesome simplicity of Middle Eastern cuisine.
Why Tabbouleh is a Healthy Choice
Tabbouleh is a naturally nutritious dish, offering an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and fibre while being low in fat. The parsley and mint are rich in antioxidants, while the tomatoes and cucumbers provide hydration and essential nutrients. Swapping traditional bulgur wheat for quinoa or gluten-free bulgur makes it a fantastic option for those with gluten intolerances, without compromising its vibrant taste or texture.
Adding sliced halal turkey to tabbouleh takes this dish to a new level, transforming it into a protein-packed, satisfying meal. Turkey, being a lean and low-fat meat, is a perfect addition for anyone looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially in January, when many prioritise nutritious meals after the indulgence of the festive season.
A Burst of Flavour
The tangy dressing of lemon juice and olive oil enhances the tender savoury flavours of the sliced turkey. Combined with the fresh herbs and crunchy vegetables, this dish offers a delightful mix of textures and a refreshing yet hearty bite.
