Awareness campaigns do a great deal to raise awareness of important matters, including how our food affects our health. By raising awareness for food and health-related issues, suppliers can gain a great understanding of the needs of consumers, and the public can educate themselves on how to better manage their symptoms and the range of products available. As we will discuss in this article, May 2025 will see several UK and international food health awareness days and weeks, including World Digestive Health Day, World Hunger Day, Food Allergy Awareness Week, and Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week. At Riverside Foods, we will be doing our best to raise awareness of the campaigns and the issues they are focusing on.
Food Allergy Awareness Week – 11th to 17th May 2025
Food Allergy Awareness Week, organised by FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education), is being held between 11th and 17th May 2025. It aims to bust many of the myths of food allergies, share facts, and bring food allergy awareness to the workplace. By addressing many of the food allergy myths, they aim to help people to better manage their symptoms. Some of the myths they address this year include:
- Each reaction will get worse and worse.
- Food allergies are the same as food intolerances.
- If a food allergy test is positive, you have a food allergy.
- Antihistamines will stop an allergic reaction.
- Once you develop a food allergy, you cannot outgrow it.
Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week – 15th to 21st May 2025
This year, Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week is taking place between 15th and 21st May with the aim of highlighting the “lesser known symptoms” of coeliac disease. They are encouraging participants to take an online self-assessment to see if they should speak to their GP about being properly tested. The awareness campaign for this year will also focus on the stories of individuals who have experienced some of these lesser-known symptoms, including neurological issues, extreme fatigue, anaemia, recurrent miscarriage, and persistent mouth ulcers.
World Hunger Day – 28th May 2025
The theme for this year’s World Hunger Day on 28th May 2025 is ‘Sowing Resilience’. The event focuses on the key issue of how climate change is disrupting the food chain due to rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and erratic weather. The organisers hope to raise awareness of drought-resistant crops and improved soil management, which can boost yields by up to 30%, even in the most climate-vulnerable regions.
World Digestive Health Day – 29th May 2025
World Digestive Health Day take place on 29th May 2025 this year. The event is organised by the World Gastroenterology Organisation with the aim of creating a global culture of wellness and resilience and encouraging everyone to take simple, mindful steps toward better digestive health.
The slogan for this year’s event is ‘Your Digestive Health: Nourish to Flourish’, which will focus on the role of digestive health on our overall well-being. In particular, it will look at how our digestive system supports the body, and by embracing nourishing dietary choices, individuals can enhance their vitality and quality of life.
